At the 2008 DOS Annual Picnic and Bird-A-Thon Awards ceremony, the final results and winners were announced in front of an enthusiastic crowd of participants and newly elected Fellow and Honorary members of DOS.
First, a few fun facts from this year's 2008 Delaware Bird-A-Thon:
- OVER 430 PARTICIPANTS
- CONTRIBUTIONS FROM 17 STATES
- 28 BUSINESS SPONSORS OR DONORS
- 7 DIFFERENT ORNITHOLOGICAL ORGANIZATIONS CONTRIBUTED
- OVER 2757 EFFORT HOURS WERE LOGGED FOR 2008 DBAT/EQUATING 115 DAYS (conservative number!)
- WINNERS INCLUDED 10 YOUTH BIRDERS FROM 3 STATES, INCLUDING GEORGIA
- 23 OF 27 DELAWARE BIRDING TRAIL SITES WERE VISITED DURING THE DBAT
- 25 SPECIES OF BIRDS WERE IDENTIFIED ON THE 2007 DBAT PROPERTY DONATED TO PRIME HOOK NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE
And now for the winners and total:
- Highest Individual Contribution: Colin Campbell (amount withheld out of respect)
- Most Funds Raised by an Individual: Esther Speck - $1054.00
- Most Funds Raised by an Organization: The Friends of Red Knot, a youth conservation group based in Baltimore, MD - $1019.00
- Top Youth Team: Sam Watson and Andrew Wright - $656.00 + 153 species = 809 total points
- Top Adult Team: Sharon Lynn, Captain; Jeff & Liz Gordon, Jim Rapp and Jim White - $4940.00 + 167 species = 5107 total points
- Lead Sponsor: DUPONT's "Clear into the Future" - $5000.00
- Best Bird: Wood Sandpiper!!
- The total funds collected for the 2008 Delaware Bird-A-Thon = $38,029.00!
All of us on the Bird-A-Thon Committee and Conservation Committee want to extend a huge THANK YOU to all who participated or otherwise supported this major conservation effort. Because of you, the success of this year's event has guaranteed more migratory shorebird habitat will be preserved and migratory raptor research will continue in Delaware!
