A much warmer day (25F to start; upper 30’s at end) yielded double the birders and birds as last month. We were treated to huge flocks of blackbirds (spring is coming!), numerous feisty Bald Eagles (hormones are surging!), and a flock of 7 Wild Turkeys (last month only fresh tracks were visible). Pools were still frozen over so waterfowl sightings were all overhead. A special thanks to Andy Ednie whose sharp eye and expert ear helped us get some of the best birds for the day.

We are looking forward to the March walk which coincides with the refuge’s 88th Anniversary celebration. Find more about the celebration here. We are hoping to see American Woodcock, Eastern Phoebe, returning Tree Swallows, and our winter-hardy warblers. The buds will be breaking then as well on the Tree Discovery Trail – if you haven’t tracked the unfolding origami of emerging leaves, you’re missing out on one of nature’s great engineering feats!
